DOST-PCAARRD Gives Briefing on the Balik Scientist Program

10 October 2024 — The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) presented the Balik Scientist Program to professionals and students of the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields at the Philippine Embassy in Brussels.
The delegation was led by DOST-PCAARRD Executive Director Reynaldo V. Ebora, Ph.D. Accompanying him were Deputy Executive Director Melvin B. Carlos, Ph.D., Director Fezoil Luz C. Decena, Dr. Jesselle S. Laranas, and Ms. Eriza C. Asilo.
The Balik Scientist Program aims to strengthen the scientific and technological human resources of the academe, public, and private institutions, including locally registered enterprises, in order to promote knowledge sharing and accelerate the flow of new technologies in the country.
DOST-PCAARRD presented the benefits and responsibilities of becoming a Balik Scientist as well as research gaps which could be narrowed through collaboration with potential Balik Scientists in the agriculture, aquatics and natural resources (AANR) sectors. They also introduced two of PCAARRD's capacity building initiatives: the International Graduate Research and Education Assistantship for Technology (iGREAT), which provides financial assistance to scholars of the Special Foreign Scholarship Programs of DOST-PCAARRD and Science Education Institute (SEI), and the Sandwich Program, which provides grants for graduate students abroad doing research in PCAARRD's priority areas.

Filipino Author-Anthologist Jacqueline Chio-Lauri Speaks at the Writers Festival of Belgium and Meets with Filipino communities in Leuven and Brussels

Filipino author-anthologist Jacqueline Chio-Lauri was in Brussels on 5 October 2024 for events that highlighted her highly acclaimed book We Cook Filipino, a compendium of heart-healthy recipies and inspiring and insightful stories from Filipino food personalities and award-winning chefs from around the world.
In the afternoon, Ms. Chio-Lauri was one of the guest speakers at the annual Writers Festival of Belgium held at the Irish College in Leuven. Her full house session was attended by international authors and guests who expressed admiration for Ms. Chio-Lauri’s success as an author but also great interest about Filipino food and the Philippines. A contingent from the Filipino Catholic Community of Leuven was also present during the session to lend their support.
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS, THOMAS MORE UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES, AND KU LEUVEN TEAM UP FOR VLIR-UOS PROJECT ON TELEREHABILITATION FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES
Researchers from the University of Santo Tomas – College of Rehabilitation Sciences (UST-CRS) and Thomas More University of Applied Sciences visit the Embassy, 03 September 2024, Brussels.
The University of Santo Tomas – College of Rehabilitation Sciences (UST-CRS), in partnership with Belgian institutions Thomas More University of Applied Sciences and KU Leuven, have partnered on a project entitled “Promoting Health Equality: Interprofessional Telerehabilitation for Persons with Disabilities in the Philippines” funded by Vlaamse Interuniversitaire Raad – Universitaire Ontwikkelingssamenwerking (VLIR-OUS – Flemish Interuniversities Council – University Development Cooperation).
The project aims to break ground on effective telerehabilitation services for adult persons with disabilities in Talim Island, Binangonan, Rizal, by identifying disability profiles of the population, exploring facilitators and barriers to telerehabilitation in remote areas, developing effective interventions for PWDs, and providing capacity-building opportunities for Binangonan’s local policy and societal stakeholders.
Seven researchers from UST, led by Assistant Dean Ma. Georgina D. Mojica and Assistant Director Christian Rey D. Rimando, visited the Embassy on 03 October 2024 together with representatives of the Thomas More University of Applied Science headed by Dr. Kirsten Schrayen to present their project to Ambassador Jaime Victor B. Ledda and Embassy officials.
Ambassador Ledda assured the project proponents of the Embassy’s support and shared the Embassy’s engagements with Belgian universities to explore possible partnerships with Philippine institutions.
Embassy Welcomes Filipino Students in Belgium, Conducts Overseas Voting Registration
Filipino students from all over Belgium get together in an event welcoming newly-arrived Filipino students at the Governor’s Residence in Ghent, Belgium, 28 September 2024.
The Philippine Embassy in Brussels and the Philippine Honorary Consulate in Flanders, Belgium held a welcome event for newly-arrived Filipino students in Belgium on 28 September 2024.
Both old and new students from universities across Belgium, including KU Leuven, Ghent University, University of Antwerp, Antwerp Management School, Université Libre de Bruxelles, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, UC Louvain, University of Hasselt, and the Institute of Tropical Medicine, convened at the Governor’s Residence in Ghent, and over Filipino food, renewed acquaintances, established new links, and exchanged views and advice on studying and living in Belgium.
Deputy Chief of Mission and Consul General Pablito A. Mendoza, Third Secretary and Vice Consul Ma. Filonila Alcaraz-Arguelles, and Honorary Consul General Ronny de Blaere offered words of motivation to the students and invited them to the activities of the Embassy and the Honorary Consulate. Together with student representatives, they encouraged the students to look out for one another and not to hesitate seeking mental health support when needed.
Honorary Consul General de Blaere then gave the students a short walking tour of Ghent’s historical center, including the plaque marking the area where once stood the house that Jose Rizal lived in during the publication of the El Filibusterismo in 1891.
The Embassy also held a mobile registration for Overseas Voting during the event, in which fifty-five (55) students were able to register or transfer their records.
