Prof. Ambeth R. Ocampo Gives Lecture in Ghent on Rizal as a Traveller
Public historian Prof. Ambeth R. Ocampo held a lecture entitled “Rizal: The Hero as a Traveller” at the historic Hotel Falligan in Ghent, Belgium on 20 March 2025.
Prof. Ocampo added to our notion of Jose Rizal as a hero — a truly great man and a genius, who was also human, someone who studied, felt homesick, and made the most of his travels. Prof. Ocampo showed how Rizal's ideas of a Filipino nation were formed as he travelled the world, as reflected in Rizal's and his friends' writings.
The lecture was made possible through collaboration with the Philippine National Commission for Culture and the Arts, the Department of Foreign Affairs’ Office of Cultural Diplomacy, the Philippine Honorary Consulate in Flanders, and the Royal Literary Society of Ghent.
During his stay in Belgium, Prof. Ocampo also visited historical sites, including the markers on Rue Philippe de Champagne 38 in Brussels and Henegouwenstraat 47 in Ghent — which mark the sites where Rizal took residence while in Belgium. Prof. Ocampo also visited the Embassy.
